Comparing Windows Defender in Windows 8 vs. third-party malware tools
TechTarget
Windows 8 is more secure out of the box than any Microsoft operating system before it, in part because of Windows Defender, an anti-malware program built into Windows 8 and enabled by default. Windows 8 Defender protects against viruses, Trojan horses, ...

Is Microsoft Security Essentials adequate protection?

Is Microsoft Security Essentials adequate protection?

This is from an actual question at Yahoo Answers > Security that I fielded and is some good recent information about MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) which is FREE to all users offered from Microsoft to the community.

QUESTION:

Is Microsoft Security Essentials adequate? I’m thinking it isn’t because I can’t get rid of CouponDropDown. I know my computer is infected. Thoughts, anyone?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArLGuoRWqBKjLKEmq4rqkeLsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20130418163217AAL3qlR

MY ANSWER AS ANTIBOTNET – ALTERNATE YAHOO ID…..

ANSWER:

This year MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) has taken some bad hits…..

PRESS: (all recently just in the news this year)

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-fights-back-on-antivirus-certification-fail-claims-malware-tests-arent-realistic-7000009998/

Now historically, Windows Defender as antispyware was created free from Microsoft to the community as about one of the only in the world with Real Time Protection activated and free. When you buy a security product this is activated, protects 24/7 against malware installations). A guess from memory was they purchased the Giant antispyware company and made it that better.

Windows OneCare was the antivirus you paid for by Microsoft. They added this to the antispyware Windows Defender to create Microsoft Security Essentials – free to the community today. Windows OneCare has been West Coast Labs Certified and has won the VB100 Award ! That means the product has got 100 percent scores. So to be fair, MSE is not a real piece of crap, but there are a good handful of more superior products available for purchase. You get what you pay for.

Check out….. Remove the CouponDropDown Adware (Uninstall Guide)

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-coupondropdown

Note BleepingComputer.Com has been a well known community help site for several years and is staffed. CouponDropDown is being described as a PUP, or potentially unwanted program. Since it is being identified only as a PUP and not malware, would explain why MSE is not detecting it as “adware” which is a threat in the antispyware category not antivirus. Adware gets removed by antispyware products. Note that adware and spyware etc can not be called that legally unless it is or they can sue / libel suit SEE http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Microsoft's security apps still trip up on Windows 8

Windows Defender did a little better at detecting "widespread and prevalent" malware, catching 98 per cent of samples thrown at it in January and 99 per cent in February. But that still wasn't quite as good as the industry average, which was 99 per cent. ....

Microsoft Security Essentials bombs AV-TEST, loses certification
Geek
AV-TEST labs has just wrapped up another round of anti-malware software analysis, and MSE didn't fare so well. In fact, it performed so poorly in two out of three areas that it lost its certification. Security Essentials scored a very respectable 5.5 ...
http://www.geek.com/articles/geek-pick/microsoft-security-essentials-bombs-av-test-loses-certification-20121129/

FOR OUR WINDOWS 8 CLUB MEMBERS.......

Microsoft Security Essentials was originally Windows Onecare by Microsoft that was not free - premium pay for and now included in Windows 8. Awhile ago, I guess at least two years now or more perhaps, Microsoft made this free to the community of computer users. It has won independent labs awards in the past as Windows OneCare, which simply means scoring 100 percent protection against the malware thrown at it in testings. West Coast Labs Certified and has won the VB100 Award. New malware is made every day and in circulation by cyber criminals. Just one of these slipping by a product can cause it to fail these tests. Now that is being nice to this product - which also includes Windows Defender which is antispyware for the combo package with Windows OneCare antivirus.

Other products such as Symantec as one of the originals have over 40 of the VB100 Awards. Sophos (UK) runs about even. ESET (NOD32) has about twice as many as those, which are the most respected and most awarded products around. To simply win one VB100 Award shows the great ability of the product - they have done it once means they can do it again, they have demonstrated their ability to provide 100 percent protection.

The greatest problem in security and computers is to reach the public and have them understand the danger of equipment destruction (computer) and loss of personal files destroyed by viruses and worms and even the ability of malware and cyber crime to search out financial items to commit identity theft with personal information stored on an unprotected computer. The second half of the problem with computer security is reaching the public to understand that stand alone free antivirus and antispyware products do not protect the computer before infection - only can scan and find and attempt removal. The process heuristics is commonly called Real Time Protection which is in pay products. There has only been two or three products in the whole world that are free and offer this. THIS is why originally Microsoft Security Essentials is mentioned as a MUST HAVE for a new PC owner/operator. Another free one that has one the VB100 Award (the most coveted prize by antivirus companies) is Comodo Antivirus http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antivirus.php

As I said, MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) does a really good job and indeed PROTECTS in real time which means as you are surfing the web or doing a download if malware tries to infect - it will BLOCK infection. Unfortunately there are a handful of pay products that do a much much much better job. For now, if you just have MSE you can add like Safe Practices which means stay away from shady places on the Net like hate groups and adult areas where many times there are major infections and at bad malicious websites intentionally infecting the PC just by visiting the site, as any infected website that may have not been the intention of the website owner but got hacked and is temporarily infected.

Even the casual good Netizen will run into malware in their lifetime. It is unavoidable. And so once becoming aware of malware and the dangers, users generally move up to the commercial products of reputation and install them and use them constantly, full scanning at least weekly - running 24/7 with Real Time Protection activated.

End of speech.
